The temperatures are rising. The number of sunbathers on the piers is quickly multiplying. The gardens are open and lush with vibrant blossoms. That can only mean one thing. It must be time for June Pride Week in New York City (and a chance to get your hands on some free samples of Christopher Street).
Every year during Pride, we as a community come together to remember the stories of Christopher Street and its surrounding history. We recall moments like the infamous Stonewall Riots of 1969, or the “good ol’ days” hanging out at Badlands or Christopher’s End. These stories have now changed the face of history. During Pride, we go back to locations like the Stonewall, or Julius, or the Piers, to reflect on where we’ve come from, remember those we’ve lost along the way, and celebrate the new windows of opportunities that are now possible. Pride is also a time to honor the people of the West Village and others who have made sacrifices in their own lives to help further the cause. It is a time to look back at where we’ve been, as we continue to push forward in pursuit of full acceptance and equality… pride is a time to truly be proud of who we all are.
In keeping with Charenton Macerations Pride tradition, I will once again be out in the West Village all next week, handing out free samples of Christopher Street, sharing more interesting stories from its rebellious past, and of course, joining in on the many festivities. Each day, I will plant myself at a specific location on Christopher Street, where you can come hang out, meet me, and experience the olfactive beauty in a place key to the fragrance’s development. Come be part of the story.
