Stonewall Inn 1969

DOMA, Prop8, and The Struggle That Started It All

In June of 1969, a group of homosexuals and their West Village supporters stood up to the police on Christopher Street. They had had enough of being pushed around and treated like subclass humans, rocking the Village over three days. These were the Stonewall Riots. While not the first time members of the LGBTQ community stood up to corruption in the United States, Stonewall is especially symbolic of the change that would begin sweeping across the country. Today, we as a community have moved one step closer to equality. For that reason, today many of us will be returning to Stonewall.

The battle for full marriage equality across the United States continues, but today’s US Supreme Court decisions on Prop8 and DOMA bring us one step closer to making that a reality. So, celebrations today and then back to work tomorrow on the other issues that we must still address (trans rights, racial inequality in the community, homelessness, youth empowerment and protection…). The battle continues.

Join me today at 5:30pm at The Stonewall Inn (53 Christopher Street between 6th and 7th Avenue). Splash on some Christopher Street, grab some friends, and come join in the historic festivities. Say goodbye to DOMA and Prop8. Today is about all of us.

Hope to see many of you there.
